Petite Individual Cherry Pie recipe

I've been craving a good 'ol cherry pie all summer and after buying a little bin of sour cherries at the farmer's market- I set out to make myself my very own personal cherry dessert- a pie, a crumble if you will! SO here's a how to....

First I pre heated the oven for 350...

Then I washed the ruby jewels, de-pitted them with my de-pitter (as seen above) then placed them into one ramkin. I sprinkled a bit of sugar on top and let them sit while I mixed up the pie crust- like topping.

The crust: Like the crumble I've mentioned before- I used the same recipe for the crust.

In a bowl mix 1 cup sugar, 1 cup flour and 1 egg. Put the mixture on top of your dessert then drizzle butter on top of that (usually one stick for the large casserole crumble, but I used a tiny amount on this). I made half this portion and saved the rest in the fridge for later in the week. I sprinkled a touch of sugar on top once again! ; )

I cooked the treat at 350 for 25 mins, or until the crust was golden and the fruit juice was bubbling. 

The English in us- inspires my family to pour heavy cream on our fruit desserts- and so I did just that, but of course Ice cream is good too! Overall this was a SUPER fast dessert for one person. It was on the healthy side- ie natural and minimal ingredients, no preservatives or weird food coloring or corn syrup....

I can see this being a fun dessert to make for an intimate dinner party! I'm sure this wont be my last cherry pie of the summer!!

Nesting Project- painted shelf

So I'm inspired! Before Christmas this past year- I wrote a blog post about this shelf I inherited asking readers to suggest a paint color.  The consensus was mango- since I have a bunch of it leftover from a project my mom completed.... but due to lack of time and a proper place to paint... the shelf remained in its unpainted state.

But now- after watching Bright Star- and seeing Martha Stewart on Jimmy Fallon last week- I have a renewed inspiration to paint this shelf.  Martha's paints are low VOC- non toxic, made with organic materials and their beautiful colors embody the inspiration of their names such as etched glass and grape jellybean! I'm now thinking something from the neutral category- either a gray/robin's egg blue or a pink with kaki tones to it, or perhaps Etched glass!?  I'll keep you posted! need to make a little more $ before I can buy the paint and spend the time on it, but its definitely one of those nesting projects to get done before the baby arrives and while it's still nice to paint outside!

DIY: Fruit fly trap

An oldie, but a goodie- a home made fruit fly trap!

I mentioned last summer how we went away for a week and came back to our kitchen infested with fruit flies! I searched online and found a fun home made trap- and set to work to eliminate our visitors. It worked wonders! And after setting a new trap this week I thought I would share the recipe!

Take a cup or bottle- fill it with apple cider vinegar and a little dish liquid. The bubbles help collect the fruit flies. But I've also found it's not totally necessary.  Then cover your container with cling wrap. Poke holes into the plastic as seen above. I tied a rubber band around the plastic to keep it all in place. Set your trap in your kitchen or infested areas! 

The results, a bunch of dead fruit flies! Gross but oh so satisfying. Happy fruit fly catching!

Bright Star: the movie a visual treat & inspiration

I recently watched Bright Star, a movie chronicling the romance between poet John Keats and his muse Fannie Brawne. The film, by Australian filmmaker Jane Campion is a visual treat, where each scene feels worthy of being documented in paint, framed, and hung in a museum. I found the overall color pallet very inspiring for future home interiors and I loved each costume and dress the talented Fannie Brawne made for herself.
